Cooking for your family should not end with aching shoulders or a stiff lower back. Yet, for many, it unfortunately does!
Why does this happen? Because traditional built-in kitchens are often constructed to a single, arbitrary “standard” height that ignores the physical realities of the people actually using the space.
If your worktop or kitchen island is too low, you are forced to stoop over the chopping board. If it is too high, you strain your shoulders lifting heavy pans.
As a technical designer, I approach every project with one fundamental principle: true luxury is defined by a space engineered to fit your specific physical dimensions. Here is a look at the science of ergonomic planning, and how our team can customize your dream kitchens to protect your posture and improve your daily workflow.
Why Height Matters for Your Kitchen Island and Workflow
To understand ergonomic design, we must first look at how the body moves between the “kitchen triangle”. In kitchen design, it is considered the go-to foundation on which most if not all designs are built around, being the pathway between the sink, the hob, and the prep area.
There is a golden ergonomic rule of thumb for this workflow: your ideal prep height (i.e. surfaces where you plan to do most of your kitchen prep work, such as your central kitchen island) should be approximately 10 to 15 cm below your bent elbow.
However, preparing food is only one part of general kitchen work. A truly ergonomic kitchen features varied heights based on the task. Washing dishes requires less bending if the sink area is positioned slightly higher, while active cooking is significantly easier if the hob is slightly lower, allowing you to easily look into deep pots without hiking up your shoulders.
Customizing a kitchen isn’t just about determining its layout to fit the room. It is about calibrating its exact height to the user. But what happens when there are two chefs in the house?
In my experience, attempting to find a “middle-ground” height for a couple usually results in a kitchen that is comfortable for neither of them. Instead, I prefer to engineer spaces with varying height zones. For example, in a past project, we designed distinct working areas tailored to each partner to ensure both individuals, despite a significant height difference, had their own comfortable, strain-free workspace.

Our Height Grid System: Engineering the Perfect Kitchen Island
Rather than relying on a “one size fits all” wooden box, our German manufacturer utilizes a sophisticated height grid system. This system offers multiple carcase (or cabinet body) heights, including standard, XL, and Maxi heights.
We then pair these engineered cabinets with fully adjustable plinths (sometimes called kickboards), which can be precisely calibrated from 70mm up to 200mm. By meticulously combining different carcase heights with different plinths, our technical team can achieve the absolute perfect ergonomic height for any user.
Occasionally, clients will ask if we should use this system to lower a section of the kitchen or kitchen island for children who like to help bake. I always advise against this. Children grow up quickly, and a permanently lowered stone worktop will eventually become uncomfortably low and unusable. The beauty of the grid system is that we can optimize the permanent architecture for the adults who will use it for decades.

Customizing Your Cabinets for Effortless Access
Ergonomic design begins at the proposed height and surface of your kitchen island and continues well into your storage options.
Traditional base cabinets with fixed internal shelves force users to get down on their hands and knees to dig for heavy pots at the back of the cupboard. At German Kitchen Design, we solve this physical friction with highly engineered full-extension pull-outs and deep drawers. Capable of holding up to 80kg, these drawers give you much easier access to items that would otherwise require you to clumsily bend down and try to reach for.
For awkward spaces, we implement brilliant high-level and corner solutions. The LeMans corner swivel pull-out effortlessly swings heavy pans out of deep, blind corners, while the iMove pull-down system for wall units brings high-shelf items down to eye level without ever needing a step stool.

A reminder that our commitment to you extends well beyond handover, as we proudly provide a 15-year warranty for all cabinets and fronts, inclusive of any moving parts. Our dedicated post-installation service team ensures that these heavy-duty drawers and precision hinges continue to glide effortlessly for years to come.
